Float over Namibia’s Sossusvlei dunes on a hot air balloon safari. Enjoy sunrise views, desert wildlife, and a champagne breakfast in the Namib Desert.
Sossusvlei is one of the most beautiful places in the world and a favorite for photographers. Here, rocky mountains, open grasslands, red sand dunes, and dark shadows come together to create an amazing view.
The plants, animals, and landscapes of the Namib Desert, the oldest desert on Earth, form a unique ecosystem.
A hot air balloon is one of the best ways to see the heart of the Namib Desert.
Hot Air Balloon Adventures in Sossusvlei offer a special way to enjoy the wide views of Namibia. This peaceful activity creates lasting memories and great photo opportunities.
Start your day early and go to the launch site under the moonlight to watch the balloon being prepared. The colorful nylon balloon, attached to strong baskets lying on their sides, is slowly filled with hot air from large flames. As the sun rises and lights up the red sand dunes, the balloon lifts gently into the sky, showing the wide views of Sossusvlei.
From above, you can spot the strange fairy circles—bare, round patches of land with no plants, which are a mystery in the Namib Desert. You may also see groups of oryx moving across the sand, looking small from high above.
The balloon floats at different heights and slowly turns with the morning breeze, giving you new views of the desert. Many animals on the ground may look up with curiosity as the balloon passes.
After about an hour, the pilot picks a good landing spot. Then you will enjoy a relaxing brunch with drinks in the open desert, where you can talk about the highlights of the morning.
When to Visit
Balloon safaris in Sossusvlei are available throughout the year, except from January 15 to February 15, when they are not offered.
Balloon flights depend on weather. Luckily, the early mornings in the Namib Desert usually have good, stable conditions. A safe flight needs clear skies, dry air, and light steady winds.
You must arrive at the meeting point at least 30 minutes before the flight starts, which is always at sunrise. After the flight, there is a champagne breakfast in the desert. You will return to your lodge or meeting point between 10 and 11 a.m.
Safety is the top concern. If the flight is canceled due to weather, you will get a refund or be rescheduled for the next available day.
