Detailed 3-Day Sossusvlei Camping Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Sesriem Campsite

You will be picked up in Windhoek or Walvis Bay. The drive to Sesriem goes through Namibia’s central plateau with mountain views. There is a stop in Rehoboth for supplies, then we pass Büllsport and continue through the desert.

We reach Sesriem by lunchtime and set up camp under a camel thorn tree with views of red desert dunes. After a picnic-style lunch, we drive to Elim Dune in the late afternoon to enjoy the evening light.

You can also choose to walk back to the campsite through the soft desert sand. This marks the start of the desert adventure.

Day 2: Visit Sossusvlei

We wake up before sunrise to visit the dunes early. Our first stop is Dune 45, which is 45 km from Sesriem. We drive there while it is still dark. Sunrise is the best time to take photos because one side of the dune is bright and the other is in shadow.

We climb Dune 45 to watch the sunrise and enjoy the views. After a quick breakfast by the road, we continue to the 2×4 car park, where two-wheel drive vehicles stop.

From there, we go through the old Tsauchab Riverbed and travel 5 km to reach Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.

Day 3: Transfer to Swakopmund, Walvis Bay or Windhoek

After an early breakfast, we travel west across the flat Namib gravel plains with dry land and mountains. We stop in Solitaire to rest and taste its famous apple pie. Visitors can also take photos of old farm vehicles there.

We then cross the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 degrees south and stop for pictures. The journey continues through two mountain passes. First is the Gaub River canyon, then the steep Kuiseb Pass, shaped by the Kuiseb River over time.

After crossing the mountains, we follow the road to the coast and finish the trip in Walvis Bay or Swakopmund.
