Tipping in Sossusvlei & Namibia – A Traveler’s Guide

Tipping Guide for Sossusvlei

In Sossusvlei, Namibia, tipping is a common way to say thank you for good service. It is especially important for guides, drivers, and lodge staff.

For guides, the usual amount is $5 to $10 USD per guest per day, or about 10% of their daily fee, according to People Safaris & Tours.

For lodge staff, there is often a tip box, and a good amount is $5 USD per guest per night. In restaurants, it is normal to leave a 10% tip for good service.

Tipping Guidelines

  • Safari Guides: At the end of the tour, each guest should give the safari guide between USD 5 and USD 10 (N$75 to N$150) per day. If you’re traveling in a group, the total tip is usually about 10% of the guide’s daily fee. A group tip of USD 20 (N$300) per day is a good starting point.
  • Game Rangers & Trackers: In a shared vehicle, each guest gives USD 7 (N$100) per day. You will likely have the same guide and tracker for your whole stay, so you can give this tip at the end of your stay instead of each day.
  • Camp or Hotel General Staff: At the end of your stay, each guest should tip USD 4 to USD 10 (N$50 to N$150) per day. Most lodges have a shared tip box at the reception. If you want to tip someone directly, you can put it in an envelope and give it to them.
  • Managers of Camps & Hotels: You don’t usually tip managers, even though they are important to your safari experience.
  • Waiters in Restaurants: A 10% to 15% tip is fair for good service. This is usually not added to your bill if your group has fewer than eight people, so you will need to add it yourself.
  • Taxi Drivers: You can round up the fare and let the driver keep the change. If the driver helps you a lot or the trip is longer than 30 minutes, a 10% tip is nice.
  • Gas Attendants: Workers at gas stations will fill your tank, check water and oil, and clean your windows. A tip of about N$10 is appreciated.
  • Parking Security: Car guards help you park and watch your car while you’re away. While not required, a tip of about N$10 is appreciated.
