The Namib-Naukluft National Park has some of Africa’s most beautiful desert scenery, with its wide, open Savannah plains and old red sand dunes that stretch all the way to the ocean.

Sossusvlei, a large clay pan surrounded by some of the highest red sand dunes in the world, is one of Namibia’s most famous attractions. This national park is also one of the largest in Africa.

Where is the park located?

Namib-Naukluft National Park is in western Namibia, between the steep mountains of the Great Escarpment and the Atlantic Ocean. It covers 49,768 km² (19,216 sq mi), making it one of the biggest parks in Africa.

The park includes the Namib Desert, Sandwich Harbour lagoon in the north, and the Naukluft Mountains in the east.

What type of wildlife will we see?

Even though the land looks dry, the Namib-Naukluft National Park is home to many special plants and animals. These species have learned to survive the strong heat in this semi-desert area.

There are more than 340 bird species, along with many insects and reptiles that live in the desert. Some mammals you may see include the rare aardvark, desert leopard, black-backed jackal, oryx, kudu, giraffe, and Hartmann’s mountain zebra. The park also has many desert plants, some of which can live for up to 2,000 years.

Top experiences to enjoy at Namib-Naukluft National Park

The best way to enjoy Namib-Naukluft National Park is to go deep into the desert. You can explore by 4×4 vehicle, take a trip into the remote areas, ride a quad bike, or enjoy a helicopter or hot air balloon flight over the tall dunes.

Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei offer amazing views during the day. At night, the sky fills with stars, making it a perfect place for photography.

When to visit Namib-Naukluft National Park

The park is open all year. However, the cooler months from May to October are the best time to visit. The weather is not too hot during the day, which is better for hiking and exploring the dunes.

From November to April, it can be very hot, but this is also the rainy season. The rain helps brighten the desert, and the skies are often clearer, which is good for birdwatching.
