How to Visit Deadvlei – Namibia’s Most Photographed Desert Spot

Deadvlei

Visiting Deadvlei was one of the main reasons I traveled to Namibia. I had seen so many photos, and it was one of those places I just had to see with my own eyes. It takes some time to get there, but trust me—there is no other place like it in the world.

Be inspired and go see it for yourself! This blog will tell you everything you need to know if you want to visit Deadvlei in Namibia.

You might be wondering what’s so special about some old trees. Funny enough, when I was walking around, a Dutch kid asked their parents, “When are we going back? It’s so hot.

These are just some dead trees.” And I get it—at that age, it might not seem exciting. But when she grows older, she will realize she visited a bucket-list place for many people.

Deadvlei is a clay pan located in the desert of Namibia, inside a protected area called Sossusvlei. What makes it special are the dead acacia trees that have been there for over 600 years.

No, they weren’t planted 600 years ago—they died 600 years ago. And they’re still in great shape! These tree skeletons look beautiful against the orange sand dunes, the white ground, and the blue sky.

How to Get to Deadvlei in Namibia

The best way to travel to Deadvlei is by rental car or in a tour group. If you rent your own car, you can stop whenever and wherever you like. If you go with a tour group, you’ll learn interesting facts about the place, but you won’t have the freedom to stay longer if you want to.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Deadvlei in Namibia?

During my visit, I had one goal: to be one of the first to arrive. Why? Because I wanted to take photos in the best light. Sunrise is my favorite time for photography, and I could imagine how nice the place would look with long shadows everywhere.

That said, Deadvlei looks beautiful all day. So don’t worry if you can’t get there early. After all, it’s one of the hardest places to reach at sunrise.
