Since entering the Namib Desert and reaching Sesriem, Sossusvlei, and Deadvlei can be a bit confusing, we will first explain how the two-gate entry system works, where all the accommodation in Sesriem is found, and the pros and cons of staying inside or outside Sesriem National Park.
Namib National Park, which includes Sesriem Canyon, Sossusvlei, Dune 45, Elim Dune, and Deadvlei, is entered through two gates. The first gate is found at the junction of the D826 road (coming from Windhoek in the north) and the C27 gravel road (coming from the south).
From this point, you can reach the fuel station, shop, and park permit office. The second gate, which leads directly into the desert, is located just before the main park buildings.
You can only go through this second gate if you have bought a park permit at the park office, which is inside the Sesriem camp reception (on the right side, 500 meters after the first gate). This gate opens one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset.
In short, if you want to visit Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, or climb Big Daddy to watch the sunrise, you must stay at one of the four places inside Sesriem: Sesriem Camping, Sossus Dune Lodge, Sesriem Oshana Campsite, or Dead Valley Lodge. Only guests staying inside the park can drive into the desert before sunrise.
We suggest booking these places as early as possible. But what if they are already fully booked? (This often happens, especially from June to October and during Easter). Don’t worry—everything is still possible.
You just need to adjust your plan a little. Below, we will list accommodation options outside the Sesriem gate. Keep in mind, though, that you cannot enter the park until the first gate opens at sunrise.
