Sossusvlei Facts – Explore Namibia’s Iconic Desert Salt Pan

Facts about Sossusvlei

One of the most amazing places in the world is the Sossusvlei sand dunes. It is a very satisfying experience to see the clean, curved slopes that rise about 300 meters above the ground.

Located in the heart of Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei is surrounded by sand dunes and dry pans that sometimes fill with water during the rainy season.

If you want to take photos of the fine details of the sand dunes, your safari should include a stop at Sossusvlei.

Sesriem

This small desert outpost is the entry point to Sossusvlei. You will need to drive across large, empty land on long, quiet roads to reach it. The Namib-Naukluft National Park office and the gas station are the main places in this outpost. To enter, you must first pay for parking and get a permit at the park office.

There are not many places to sleep in this area, but you may find a few options a few kilometers away. These places offer great views of the Sossusvlei dunes, which rise in the southwest of Sesriem like large walls.

Deadvlei

If you have seen pictures of black, dead trees standing on white sand, surrounded by orange dunes, then you have seen Deadvlei. These are some of the most famous images from Namibia.

If you visit Deadvlei around midday, you will see a very dry and silent place. This is also where you will find the tallest dune in the area, Big Daddy.

The sandy path to Deadvlei begins at the 4WD parking area. Make sure not to drive past it if you are using a 2WD car, as only 4WD vehicles are allowed beyond that point.

Sesriem Canyon

This canyon is very different from the soft dunes and wide sandy areas around Sossusvlei. It is found along the road between Sesriem and Sossusvlei. In the Namib, this canyon is a special place.

It has strange rock shapes, small pools of water, and narrow walking paths.

You may feel very close to the rocks or even a bit closed in when you walk here. This canyon was formed over millions of years by water and the hard setting of sand and gravel.

It gives you a feeling of strength and calm that you will not find out in the open desert.

Sossusvlei

This is Namibia’s main place to visit for sand dunes. Many people line up at the gate early in the morning and late in the day. The road that follows the dry Tsauchab River leads to the dunes.

Elim Dune is found at the far northeast edge of the river valley. Because it is close to the gate, it is a good spot to visit in the evening when the sun is lower.
