Part of the ancient Namib Desert, Big Mama Dune is a star dune located in the Sossusvlei area of the large Namib-Naukluft National Park.
Sand has been building up in Sossusvlei for millions of years. Because of the high iron content in the sand, which oxidizes, it has a bright red color. The dunes in this area are called star dunes because of their shape.
The wind, which carries sand from other places, is the main force behind the formation of these star dunes.
At more than 200 meters high, Big Mama is about the same height as a 60-story building. Although it is not as tall as Big Daddy Dune, its height is still impressive.
The climb may be a little difficult, but the wide view from the top is worth it.
From the top, you can see many surrounding dunes, Dead Vlei (a dry salt and clay pan), and the Namib Desert stretching into the distance. You might be lucky and see some animals such as ostriches, springboks, and oryx.
The best time to visit Big Mama is early in the morning. At that time, the temperature is cooler, and the rising sun casts a warm orange glow over the dunes.
To visit Big Mama, you must pay the Naukluft Park entrance fee at the Sesriem Gate. Then you drive about 60 kilometers (37 miles) to the main dune area.
Remember to bring plenty of drinking water, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. Always follow the rule: leave no trace of your visit.
