Sossusvlei Travel Tips – How to Visit Namibia’s Desert Safely

Sossusvlei Travel Advice & Tips

Two of Namibia’s most famous natural places, Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, are found in the wide Namib-Naukluft National Park. These areas are known for their tall red sand dunes, flat white salt pans, and very old camel thorn trees.

They give travelers a special experience of Namibia’s desert landscape. A visit to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei is a must for anyone who loves photography, nature, or adventure.

Where is Sossusvlei?

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are about 350 kilometers (217 miles) southwest of Windhoek, in the middle of the Namib Desert. They are part of Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Africa.

The nearest small town is Sesriem, which is the main entrance point.

How to Travel by Road to Sossusvlei

The most common way to reach Sossusvlei is by guided tour or self-drive. The drive from Windhoek to Sossusvlei takes about five to six hours, mostly on gravel roads.

For the last 5 kilometers through the soft sand of the dry Tsauchab River past the 2WD parking area, a 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended. It is a short 4×4 drive to reach the last parking lot, called the Deadvlei 4×4 parking area.

For those who do not want to drive on sand, there is a shuttle service available from the 2WD parking lot.

From Windhoek to Sossusvlei: about 350 km via B1 and C19 (5–6 hours)

From Swakopmund to Sossusvlei: about 400 km via C14 (5–6 hours)
