Sossusvlei is located in southwestern Namibia, about 350 kilometers southwest of Windhoek. It lies within the large Namib-Naukluft National Park and is known for the famous Deadvlei clay pan and huge red sand dunes.
If you’re planning a road trip in Namibia, it takes about 6 to 8 hours to drive from Windhoek or Swakopmund to Sossusvlei.
Self-Drive
Sossusvlei is around 350 kilometers southwest of Windhoek. One day is enough to reach it if you are visiting as part of a longer driving trip through Namibia (6 to 8 hours).
Although it is possible to drive a 2WD vehicle on the road, we recommend using a high-clearance vehicle (SUV or 4WD), as some parts of the road can be difficult. We had to drive very slowly in some places because of thick sand.
You can drive from Windhoek via Rehoboth, Klein Aub, Rietoog, and Bullsport. But from what we’ve heard, this route can be hard without a 4WD. The other option, which is a bit longer, goes through Mariental and Maltahohe to reach Sesriem.
Use our Namibia driving tips as a guide, carry extra food and water, and always fill up your fuel whenever you see a gas station.
When to Visit Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei can be visited all year round because of its location and dry climate. Namibia is one of the sunniest countries in the world, with about 300 sunny days each year.
We suggest visiting between May and October. During this time, the winter weather is cooler and more comfortable for exploring the area.
Keep in mind that during Southern Africa’s school holidays, the demand for accommodation and campsites is high, and places may get fully booked quickly.
If you plan to visit during the summer, temperatures can be very hot. Always carry extra water and pack suitable clothes for the heat.
