Best Time to Visit Sossusvlei – Seasonal Guide to Namibia’s Desert Dunes

Best Time to Visit Sossusvlei

In short, autumn or spring are the best seasons to visit Sossusvlei in southern Namibia. These times offer clear skies, better conditions for photography, and milder temperatures during the day and night.

The Namib Desert does not have strong seasonal changes like other regions, but spring and autumn are the best times to explore Sossusvlei. There is very little rain, and the days are usually dry and clear. The desert landscape, animals, and activities remain enjoyable all year round.

Since the seasons don’t change much, the best time to visit Sossusvlei often depends on what else you want to do in Namibia or southern Africa. For example, if you want to combine your visit with a safari in Etosha, you can plan your trip to match the best time for both places.

No matter the season, the key to enjoying Sossusvlei is to wake up early. Early mornings have the best light, fewer people, and give you the rest of the day to relax or enjoy other activities like walking, game drives, sunset trips, or hot air balloon rides.

If Sossusvlei is your top destination and the desert has received some rain, the best months to visit are March and April. Just a little rain can change the desert from all brown to a mix of brown and green. The result is something very special.

Your trip to Sossusvlei is not likely to be affected by rain, but summer heat and strong winter winds may have an effect.

Winter (May to August)

During winter, nights can be cold with temperatures dropping to 0°C (32°F), so if you’re camping, bring warm clothes and a good sleeping bag. Days are usually warm, dry, and clear—perfect for outdoor activities.

The strong east wind is the only thing that could disturb your winter trip. Normally, cool air comes from the Atlantic Ocean. But in winter, the inland gets colder than the coast, and this can cause hot, dusty winds from the desert to blow toward the ocean.

If these winds come, your activities may be limited to early morning before the wind starts and late afternoon when it dies down. These winds usually last a few days.

It is best to travel at the beginning or end of winter when the wind is less likely, and the nights are not too cold.

Summer (September to February)

Summer in the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei starts in September with spring. The early summer months of October and November can be very hot, with daytime temperatures reaching the high 30s (95°F) and sometimes going over 40°C (104°F). Even though the nights are cooler and calmer, the heat can bring strong, gusty winds.

From December to February, summer rains fall in other parts of Namibia. These rains help to cool the desert a bit. The evenings are usually mild and clear, and the southwesterly wind starts in the afternoon and continues until sunset.
